Arsenal 5 – 0 Villa; A gulf in class and an utter shambles

They say the bookies are usually right and so it proved today.
With 20-20 hindsight, we didn’t even deserve that 13-1 that was quoted, in my opinion.

So what went wrong?
I don’t know where to start, but I guess the lineup is as good a place as any.
Cleverley and Richardson started and as per usual I asked myself why?
Gabby, who’s been reasonably prolific against Arsenal was not started. I know I’ve called for him to be dropped myself, but this is one of the only games of the season where I’d actually want him to play.

I just don’t understand Lambert’s thinking at all, as we’ve had decent results against the top clubs by sitting deep and countering. Yet what has previously worked was abandoned by Lambert today and we tried to play far too high up, resulting in Arsenal getting in behind us to score after only eight minutes.
The deft flick on from Ozil didn’t help matters and the sickening thing here is that I was thinking about him and how he was bound to score, just before the kickoff.
To think we were linked with him not that long ago. That’s how far we’ve fallen.

We were very lucky to go in only one down at half time, as it could easily have been three, after they had chances and hit the post.
Our defence just after the goal was a complete shambles and we weren’t picking their players up at all.
Do we man mark or zone defend?
I don’t have a clue.

Then we came out for the second half, where things just got worse.
We looked aimless and I’m struggling to see what there is to discuss here.

A couple of points though;
Sanchez, while he was incredibly frustrating in the way he gave the ball away today, was for me, the only one (Gil apart) that was looking to actually go forward and look for something. I remember him at least twice running straight down the middle, only for him to reach a position where you could practically see him thinking “now what am I supposed to do?”, because there wasn’t an option around him, apart from Benteke, who was isolated up front.
I feel really sorry for him and he surely must be wondering what’s going on in the way we play the game.

Gil looked good again and he too was actually looking to achieve something.

The rest of the midfield were totally anonymous and I just kept thinking to myself it’s either the players are utter rubbish or it’s the way they’re being played.
I came to the conclusion that it’s probably a bit of both.

Lambert changed it up, but it was already too late and the game was already lost when we went two down by a goal from Ozil.

At the end of the day, we had two chances on target and yet again, that just isn’t enough.
So, we’ve now gone six games or ten hours and twelve minutes without scoring in the league.
Apparently, that’s another record low, although I’m not sure if that’s in the prem or overall.

They’ve just shown a table of the lowest scorers in the English league, on the telly.
West brom are 91st with 20 goals scored.
We’re 92nd with 11 scored.

While I expected a loss today, Lambert should be sacked for that alone.
He should also be sacked for the way we came out against Arsenal too, as that was tactical naivety at it’s best.
But we all know it isn’t going to happen.

To think it’s Chelsea up next.
What’s the solution there Lambert?
Will you be mug enough to try the same again?
It really wouldn’t surprise me if he does, as it seems he’s untouchable.
And that’s a bigger joke than what happened today.

Total waffle, Benteke on form is miles better than Lambert at just about everything, including holding the ball up.

benteke is a statue at best. seen more movement in a corpse. come end of this season, he will go on strike like a ghent. force his way out like a model professional he is

if the first season wasn’t a fluke then that means he isn’t trying a inch this season. i personally hope they drop him and play guzan up front

sorry i couldn’t help myself. but going on his efforts at arsenal, probably guzan could do better than him, he showed more effort booting the post after the pen, than benteke showed all game.

i don’t usually bitch about players or managers, but honestly giddy how many players did you see put in real shift against arsenal. benteke was not alone, i saw most of um down tools. it was unacceptable. they simply don’t care. they would if they were docked. benteke was happy to sign his improved contract. hasn’t broke into a sweat since he returned from his injury. just doesn’t give a shit

Ive just twigged. This is one of those deals that never had any chance of happening.. I.e belhanda, brahimi, canales etc etc so Lambert can say well we tried really hard to sign a player but it’s January and it’s really hard.

We can look at this two ways Nath,if we are in negotiations with Lambert, could it be they know Benteke on the move come July, or trying to get Benteke to do his job? because he giving me signals he’s fed up with the setup, what you think?.

your spot on bill benteke doesn’t want to play for us and you can’t blame him. but if we continue playing a 10% interested benteke we are going down. is kojak gonna return anytime soon ???? can gabby or weimann play the main striker???? i want us safe and if this means spending our sky money. i say spend, i think benteke will be off anytime a decent offer comes in.

So if Lambert was planning on buying his namesake that suggests that he would be playing 2 strikers?!! Something he has never really done. Maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel…

Could we maybe see a 4-4-2 with Benteke and Weimann up front…??!!

I’ve been saying this for the past couple of years now – what’s wrong with a good old fashioned 4-4-2 with wingers?! Whip the ball into Benteke and tell Weimann to pick off the scraps. Simple! Why are we making things so hard?!

        nath February 3, 2015 at 6:05 pm . Reply

it has something to do with being out numbered in the center of midfield. most teams play 3 center midfielders. if you play the 442 you simply get the run around and you wingers get starved of the ball.

It just shows us Nath nobody wants Lambert as a manager, that why we get turned down, only players we would get are ones from abroad , and that’s for wanting a chance to get here.

        nath February 3, 2015 at 7:46 am . Reply

true….. but owner stench is just as pungent. players can’t be exempt from this mess. at arsenal the manager was badly at fault with the tactics, but the players downed tools and that’s criminal. they ignored the villa fans at the end, because they knew they hadn’t tried a inch. only a few went someway over to the fans the others made a shape exit.

if we go down at least we rebuild from scratch, players manager and owner will all move on and good riddance to the lot.

p.s its easier to mention the players that tried than those that didn’t ~ but ooohaha said benteke hasn’t been trying and i have to agree. i watched the swansea win over soton after our shambles. gomes the swansea lone ranger up front. had no service wot so ever first half. but he busted a gut trying to make bad balls into better ones. when he got the ball, he did his best to hold it, until his team got close to him. benteke stands there, but wot can we do. he’s the only one fit at the club that can play the role of lone ranger.

We could not tempt any decent players, due to 3 large points.

    1. The Manager is a tactical buffoon
    2. We will be relegated
    3. Decent players for no fault of their own have their careers wrecked by nasty and naive decisions (bomb squad)

We are on a mission to be relegated and I think Lambert and Lerner deserve each other.

Sooooo apparently we had 5M lying around and could afford to give 40K plus wages to a player..

Yet waited till the last minute to try and persuade a 33 year to come and play for us..

No back up player in mind.. NOTHING.. what a joke..!

A target man at that.. when we are supposedly trying to play tippy tappy football at the moment..

We are a complete joke.. with a clown in charge of our team..

We may well survive.. and it will be down to QPR Burnley and Lesta being worse then us.. that is the only grain of hope we can hang onto..
