Arsenal 5 – 0 Villa; A gulf in class and an utter shambles

They say the bookies are usually right and so it proved today.
With 20-20 hindsight, we didn’t even deserve that 13-1 that was quoted, in my opinion.

So what went wrong?
I don’t know where to start, but I guess the lineup is as good a place as any.
Cleverley and Richardson started and as per usual I asked myself why?
Gabby, who’s been reasonably prolific against Arsenal was not started. I know I’ve called for him to be dropped myself, but this is one of the only games of the season where I’d actually want him to play.

I just don’t understand Lambert’s thinking at all, as we’ve had decent results against the top clubs by sitting deep and countering. Yet what has previously worked was abandoned by Lambert today and we tried to play far too high up, resulting in Arsenal getting in behind us to score after only eight minutes.
The deft flick on from Ozil didn’t help matters and the sickening thing here is that I was thinking about him and how he was bound to score, just before the kickoff.
To think we were linked with him not that long ago. That’s how far we’ve fallen.

We were very lucky to go in only one down at half time, as it could easily have been three, after they had chances and hit the post.
Our defence just after the goal was a complete shambles and we weren’t picking their players up at all.
Do we man mark or zone defend?
I don’t have a clue.

Then we came out for the second half, where things just got worse.
We looked aimless and I’m struggling to see what there is to discuss here.

A couple of points though;
Sanchez, while he was incredibly frustrating in the way he gave the ball away today, was for me, the only one (Gil apart) that was looking to actually go forward and look for something. I remember him at least twice running straight down the middle, only for him to reach a position where you could practically see him thinking “now what am I supposed to do?”, because there wasn’t an option around him, apart from Benteke, who was isolated up front.
I feel really sorry for him and he surely must be wondering what’s going on in the way we play the game.

Gil looked good again and he too was actually looking to achieve something.

The rest of the midfield were totally anonymous and I just kept thinking to myself it’s either the players are utter rubbish or it’s the way they’re being played.
I came to the conclusion that it’s probably a bit of both.

Lambert changed it up, but it was already too late and the game was already lost when we went two down by a goal from Ozil.

At the end of the day, we had two chances on target and yet again, that just isn’t enough.
So, we’ve now gone six games or ten hours and twelve minutes without scoring in the league.
Apparently, that’s another record low, although I’m not sure if that’s in the prem or overall.

They’ve just shown a table of the lowest scorers in the English league, on the telly.
West brom are 91st with 20 goals scored.
We’re 92nd with 11 scored.

While I expected a loss today, Lambert should be sacked for that alone.
He should also be sacked for the way we came out against Arsenal too, as that was tactical naivety at it’s best.
But we all know it isn’t going to happen.

To think it’s Chelsea up next.
What’s the solution there Lambert?
Will you be mug enough to try the same again?
It really wouldn’t surprise me if he does, as it seems he’s untouchable.
And that’s a bigger joke than what happened today.

I’m as disappointed as the rest that we didn’t add some more quality. I’m glad we didn’t get lambert though. Too much money at his age.

Interesting though that about 8 Prem teams spent nothing at all in January. I think only Leicester and West Brom of the teams around us spent more.

I suppose if we had done no business and then got Sinclair and Gil yesterday we would have been a bit happier.

I doubt that it will make a difference. Manager and tactics will ensure we don’t escape this time

They play City so when they lose, he’ll rightfully get a pass. They did the wrong thing by not getting another striker.

Mike Ashley does everything he can not to spend money. So they weren’t going to appoint anyone until the end of the season. Hell if he’s still owning them this summer, I can see Carver getting it permanently.

McClaren? I’m skeptical and don’t know if he’d be the right man. We need to go an entire different way than we have. Similar to Houllier, but someone younger.

respect your ideas and my idea is we need a coach that can get the whole club from the 1st team to youths playing correctly. look i doubt we both get what we want anyways.

what did you make of the arsenal game, i couldn’t face reading all the posts. i only posted monday myself on the game

          5. Andrew
            Andrew February 3, 2015 at 9:13 pm . Reply

We need similar to Southampton or City. I know we won’t have the money of City, nor be able to get any youth player we want, but something similar where the youth play the way the senior side does and when they’re ready, no matter at 18 or 24, they can get into the team.

I didn’t post about the game, I knew basically what everyone was gonna say. Cleverley was terrible, Sanchez shouldn’t play, they’d let Delph and Benteke again off the hook, etc etc.

We were awful. Sanchez tried but when Weimann goes off you get no movement up front and I am starting to believe Badger in that what Benteke does is what Lambert wants. Lambert even said he won’t change tactics/believes they’re right so I can only think Benteke isn’t this stubborn, careless. Hell Adebayor moves more and he’s thought of as one of the laziest players, as did Berbatov. Can only think Benteke’s told be in the final third at all times when we have the ball, and be where the CB’s are. Delph as per usual did nothing but lose the ball trying to dribble around and Cleverley… Yeah. Still think Weimann needs to play off Benteke in a 4-2-3-1 formation. The guys a natural CF, I do think while he’s nowhere near as good, but could be our Aguero/Suarez type where he plays off a natural striker, comes deep for the ball, makes the runs, can even set things up. Really think that’s how we should be playing with Bacuna on the right and Gil left. Westwood and Sanchez central.

As for the back 4… Hutton again used incorrectly. He can’t be so far forward and not care to get back, but again I think this is Lambert’s doing. Hutton when defending can defend well, but he’s not a guy that is going to do both most of the game and Lambert wants him forward. Which means if that’s the case, Richardson can’t play LB and Cissokho who’s a solid defender but poor going forward has to play. Okore and Clark looked awful together, and it still baffles me how people claim Clark’s a squad player and Okore should start every game, when they admit Clark’s been better than Okore. Clark’s only 25… He should be starting next to Vlaar for me.

Starting to also agree that Guzan has far too many faults to his game, though Given’s awful and hasn’t been good since his Newcastle days, so we’re stuck. But then the way we play and how open we typically are doesn’t help. Everything’s a mess tactically and that’s 100% down to Lambert being our tactician. I know you blame Lerner for where we are, and yes he can be blamed. But we’ve lost no one important under Lambert and we’ve only gotten worse each year. That’s gotta tell you that he’s completely at fault for the crap on the pitch when we’ve sold no one, lost no one and have only spent money on players he wants.

agree with most of what you say. the way the team tried to play was lamberts doing. the fullbacks have the freedom to venture forwards. most other premiership teams are doing this, but our players are struggling to fathom it.its a case of pouring forwards when its safe too not willy nilly. far to adventurous against arsenal,

to beat arsenal you need be solid down the middle,.defend deeper and counter when you can. we tried to out play um which was a bigger joke than them giving up when arsenal scored the second.

Very true, no matter how much possession Arsenal’s had the last 5-10 years per game, they’ve always been far more dangerous on the counter as they’re a very fast team. Not a single team can play a high line against them, maybe other than Arsenal themselves when they had Clichy and Sagna who were quite quick themselves.

It didn’t take long for me to turn down my friend’s offer of a very expensive seat at the Chelsea match. I will watch that game from my sofa – at least I can hide behind it if it gets too frightening, or phone Paddy Power and put the cash on Lambert’s head instead.

Interesting comments above about Benteke’s strangely bad positioning. I would hope that nobody who has any coaching role from the Heskey days remains on the staff. Benteke is turning into a Heskey clone. Principal symptom is getting in a scoring position too early, so having to stand still and wait for the ball. Whereas if he were further back and sprinting to the same spot he would meet a cross with momentum. I really don’t know if this is on goofy’s instructions or is just Benteke getting the hump with playing for us. I also see he runs to the rear post. With the height of keepers in the PL now, not to mention defenders, that is asking a lot to get a cross which is too high for the keeper and the covering centre half and is just right for him. The correct run for Benteke is to the near post.

My main complaint is with Delph, He runs towards any Villa player with the ball in the back four or midfield, demanding the ball. Not always a straight run either but one which cuts out the track of a pass to another Villa player further forward. This is happening too often to be accidental.

Granted that Hoddle may be better than Lambert, but his record is ‘average’ at best as far as I can see. He did moderately well at Chelsea and Spurs, although that was 12 and 20 years ago, and both clubs were relatively bigger spenders than Villa are today.
