Very predictable result, nothing learned from last season. Don’t like to pick on him because he’s useful away, but Weimann is not contributing anything other than a bit of huff and puff. We really need to make 2-3 changes from away games to home games. Creativity needed but we’ve known this for a few seasons now. Just look at what a difference one quality player can make ie Ben Arfa.

Well I’m inclined to agree with Oohah and Terry, start of the season we came out with all guns firing, what the fuck gone wrong? this time we cannot blame Vlaar Clarke both saved us from a bigger defeat, I like one or two other can see complacently in the team midfield was never right from the start, we do have to blame Lambert on today’s results his home work was wrong he should have known that Newcastle would play 5 across , we should have played wide on the wing. Not down the middle.

Agree bill fwiw I thought Clarke played really well today and even vlaar did ok but Should if cut out cross for their first goal. I think okore being injured is a massive blow as he wil easily be our best ch lets hope he’s not out too long. It seems that all we do pass to Benteke up front and now he is being Sussed a d crowded out all tge time the problem is there is no plan B just like under MON. If you look at our squad as a whole you have to say that the players themselves are just not good enough especially at home. Kae was dire today and gave the ball away at least 3 times before his 4th give away led to their goal. Why lambert bought a striker instead of a creative midfielder is a serious question that needs to be asked.

I think Norwich are beatable but man city ain’t all that they’ve not started well this season and couldn’t beat stoke today so u never know. Unfortunately even if we lost both games 10 nil lamberk will still be here the problem is he is simply doing whats asked of him ie keeping us up that is his remit and technically that makes him immune from the sack. The other problem of course is if he went then what I can’t think of one half decent manager who would come here tbh.

Just watched Everton game and in all honesty they are miles ahead of us. Thye knocked the ball around nicely, chased and harassed Chelsea and should have beaten they by 2 or 3. We cannot expect win at home if we pump up long balls and give away easy possession. Most of Evertons moves went through Barkley who was playing in just behind Jelavic. WE HAVE NOBODY PLAYING THAT ROLE!!

But we haven’t actually gotten to watch the new players play. Bringing on Tonev in the 88th minute is absolutely pointless. The kid’s quality if you watched Bulgaria play, him and Popov are absolute fantastic together but he can’t do it if he’s given 5 minutes at a time. Helenius has gotten 7 minutes this season and Bacuna 92. That’s not enough to show their talents because of the way we play. Okore was always going to show them as the way Lambert plays, Villa defend… A LOT.

Did you read his comments? He says the same thing 10 different ways to put the blame on the players.
“It was frustrating, very much so.

“We never got going in the first half. It was unlike us. But we can’t lose goals like the way we did.
“We started the second half really well. But the first half, we lost a really poor goal and the second I thought was even worse.
“They get back into it then. The impetus and ascendancy was with us. But you can’t defend that way.
“We don’t set them out to play that way. You have to give Newcastle credit for starting the game well. We are not a team who can play slow football. We don’t have that know how yet to play that way.
“A big part of our game is our energy and tempo. We started slowly. In the second half, it was much more like us.
“It wasn’t like us, especially in the first half. In the second half it was a lot better.
“You pick them up and go again on Monday now. We have Norwich on Saturday.
“I can’t fault them for effort. They gave me everything they had to try and retrieve it. But the disappointing thing was the two goals.
“I am not one for making excuses. We got beat because we didn’t start the game in the right manner.
“The frustrating thing in the games we’ve played is we have always conceded the first goal. We have had to come back from that. That’s a lot to ask every time. It’s a lot to do. It’s disappointing to start in the manner we did.
“But I can’t fault my team for effort. I’d like to get results and more points. But I can’t fault them for the way they try to do the right things.”

He’s starting to sound so much like McLeish when all Villa did was defend and he continued to say that “this wasn’t a McLeish-like performance”. I mean at the end he claims they “try to do the right things”. but it’s his job to pick the team to do the right things and he continues to fail miserably. I almost want him out for this garbage.

Your right it is not their fault and we can’t blame them for coming here. If I was playing for a lower league team in a couple of grand a week and a team like villa offered me the prem for 10-15m I’d take them up on it to even if I didn’t think I was good enough as that’s their problem IMO. Like I said earlier youth is great but it has to be counterbalanced by experience. Lerner just wants fourth from bottom that is more than obvious now and if lambert is sacked he will simply get another putsy to do the same thing.

Villa fans have been taken for mugs by Lerner why so many have bought into his new ‘vision’ is beyond me. This ‘vision’ seems to be to survive in the prem while spending next to nothing on transfer fees and wages. I thought we were a big club but Lerner appears to want to lower our expectations to match his. We are heading for our 4th consecutive relegation battle because of this idiotic tw*t !

Agree. Initially Lerner did try to crack the top four but when MON ballsed it up his priority is now 4th from bottom. I’m also amazed how he’s succeeded in lower fans expectations where we now see staying in the prem as the holy grail. We are the new Wigan. This club will never do well under this regime it’s so obvious it’s untrue!! Iv nothing against us bringing in young talented players with older players to bring them on but we just buy quantity over quality hoping we will unearth another Benteke who will piss of ASAP.

Just back from the match. It’s a long drive home after that kind of display! I haven’t read any of the replies yet so bear with me if I’m repeating stuff others have said.

Funnily enough I was thinking about Albrighton too and Gabby wide on the left, Benteke scored from a corner, that’s what Kozak can do too (and Helenius, see pre-season). I thought Wiemann looked better when Kozak came on and he played in the middle, behind the three up front. Wiemann had a bad day though, as did Westwood. I don’t want to see KEA play for some time, he created virtually nothing. We were relying on Luna and Lowton to get the crosses in and it just didn’t happen, plus they weren’t getting back fast enough.

We need to have a different game plan. Who’d have thought going into the match that we’d play exactly the same 4-4-3 with exactly the same players and lots of long balls up to Benteke? It looked like Villa of a few years ago, punt the ball to a big target who will lose it and allow the opposition to attack again, for goalie to collect and punt to a big target who will lose it etc etc etc.

I might already have mentioned this but KEA is not good enough.

On the plus side I thought Vlaar was very good, Okore was excellent (such a shame about the injury), Delph put his heart into it again (is anyone else playing ‘guess in which half Delph will get his yellow card’?) and Gabby was excellent too. Benteke did what Benteke does.

Wiemann really looked like he cared. He works his socks off and was making runs and finding space and people were ignoring him and playing the ball backwards or sideways or whatever. There was so little creativity on show today. I really think he needs a proper what it says on his shirt, our number 10, the attacking midfielder we’ve been waiting for.

    So, perhaps:

    Lowton Okore Vlaar Luna
    Albrighton Wiemann Delph Gabby/Tonev
    Gabby/Kozak Benteke

    Or is that just stupid?

    1. Foxy
      Foxy September 14, 2013 at 9:26 pm . Reply

One other thing, KEA was responsible for the first goal by losing the ball and going down expecting a free kick. Was it Westwood or Lowton who made the next mistake to allow the goal to happen? The Sturridge goal was pure class. The two Newcastle goals today were crap defending and easy finishes.

Clark played really well, as did Vlaar (when he slipped up though I thought we were in trouble!). I think Okore has been consistently good enough to come ahead of Clark but I’m happy to be proved wrong if we can have a decent central defence.

Quality costs money but Lerner prefers tje club to deal in the bargain basement. While the top clubs shop at M&S others at Asda we have to make do at Lidels ! Aston Villa FC has no ambition and is in serious decline and yet some fans think Lerner is a great guy. I think today 14th September shocked everyone,we never thought that Newcastle would have an easy game that they had today, at least i didnt.who do we blame? player’s, Lambert?, me its at the feet of Paul Lambert, why lack of vision didn’t do his homework, Newcastle utd picked themselves up after having just as bad a season as us, they did something about it we haven’t ,we seemed to have lost that fight, player’s leaving it to others to get the ball, I guess some will say give it time, not for me ,a player that puts a Villa shirt on dies for it, I didn’t see that at Villa Park today. Luna was bad I actually said that on his first game, OK going forward but cannot defend he doesn’t retreat back quick enough on loosing the ball, midfield is poor need a creative player kae is not good enough, nor is weimann, I hope the way I see it does not offend and that things are seen at Villa and soon.

I think Wiemann is class but needs a confidence boost. Plus he was making runs and space and either the defence/midfield didn’t spot him or ignored him in favour of a sideways pass. I don’t think Newcastle were that good today, we were just rubbish. Passing the ball out of play, or just giving it straight to the opposition. I don’t know where the confidence has gone but we need a) new ideas, b) a different formation with rotation of some players, c) KEA banned and d) tactics.

I’ve mentioned this before, Luna, Delph and Gabby work well together down the right. Lowton and Wiemann aren’t working well because there’s no one linking them. Put Wiemann in the middle with Albrighton on wide right (or Bacuna). Wiemann has imagination, works well with Benteke, can score goals, has energy to put himself in space, tries stuff on etc. KEA was dire today. Sure he made some nice passes but it would be interesting to see how many went sideways.

I’m still positive about this squad but all our opponents have worked out how to deal with Benteke, and I’m in agreement with everyone else that Luna and Lowton can’t be both defenders and wingers at the same time. What’s happened to the passing Lambert had the players doing last season? Why can’t we pass the ball up the field rather than just have Guzan punt it up to Benteke?

    Andrew September 14, 2013 at 9:52 pm . Reply

We’re being linked with Lescott again for a January move. I don’t think our CB’s are the problem. I’m happy with any combination of the 4 at the moment. We need a DM. Sylla needs to start. I don’t care if he’s not creative, however having 3 CM’s that can’t cover the fullbacks, nor are creative in their own rights and can get run over at any time isn’t good enough. Sylla will at least cover Lowton or Luna when they get forward.

Although we have plenty of squad players we are still struggling for width and creativity. We need natural wingers desperately, someone who’s job is to run up and down his line and will put in a good cross and will occasionally drift in and play are part in building up attacks. We need to mix up the formations and defence have got to sort their acts out. Why can we not bring in a top defensive coach? I would love to see a strong centre midfield who rarely leaves the centre circle just launching passes to wingers and central attackers and will pinch the ball back. This would free delph up to focus on his attacking game. I think lamberts tactics at times are seriously alarming. If the season starts to look like another relegation battle its time to call it a day for this teams visions and add solid reinforcements in january. We will be pushing people r luck this season

We were all taken in by American spin and tjought of Lerner as a knight in shinning armour but he has turned out to be the court jester. If we want a new exciting era it will need a change of ownership because this man is only interested in cost cutting and running the club on a shoe string budget. Lerner has done nothing for the club or its fans in his time here. If he continues much longer it will end in the club being relegated it is now time to lay the blame where it is deserved at Lerners door for his poor running of the club.
