Capital One Cup Preview

So this week sees us in cup action as we welcome Leyton Orient to Villa Park for the Capital One cup second round.

This is a competition i personally look forward to and feel it is our best chance of winning something which is probably what 15 of the other premier league teams think too!!

There is some good memories to be had when it comes to Villa and the league cup. Who can forget the 2 legged semi-final against Tranmere Rovers and more recent was the breathtaking 6-4 win against Blackburn. There is some bad memories too but i’ll leave them for somebody else to mention.

So our opponents, Leyton Orient. Promoted from league two last season and already they are showing they are a tough nut to crack in league one. They’ve had some decent results including a fine 3-1 win at Oldham. They will come to Villa Park full of confidence having not been beaten since the first day of the season, a 2-1 home defeat to Chesterfield. They beat Plymouth Argyle at Home Park 6-5 on penalties, after drawing 3-3 to progress to round two of the competition

I’m hoping we give some fringe players a run out including Okore, Cole and Bent who can hopefully give Lambert something to think about for the weekend game.

Despite us going out the past two seasons to lower league teams in the cup competitions i feel we have more experience in our team as well as more quality. Providing we go into the game not underestimating our opponents our quality will shine through and i predict a comfortable win.

Prediction.

Darren Bent first goal and Villa to win 4-1 pays 40/1.

Oohah seems to have caught the manager’s attitude to the Mickey Mouse Cup right. Put out all the Goofys. By the way, I learned this only from the TV highlights, Orient made six changes from their League team.

Still it proved a few points 1/ we paid the right price for Cole = £0: 2/ The Bomb Squad idea was a good one, Bent can re-join it and take Baker with him. If we can loan them to our relegation rivals it will kill two birds with one stone. 3/ Gabby may be shite but there is no obvious replacement; 4/ Despite the arrival of Keane the training is still woeful if pitch results are the arbiter. Shooting at goal is a fundamental skill, and top professionals should be able to get shots on target even when off balance or running at pace. It is not necessary to aim to glance the ball in off the goal frame, if they aim straight at the keeper and lash it – the ball will probably need a full stretch save. So what do they do in training other than injure each other. Anybody know?

Delph in England squad. Well deserved IMO. It probably means that he will be on his bike as well now. Why the fuck didnt we try to renew his contract earlier? His wage demands will now rocket. Why dont we ever do ‘forward planning’? Grealish should also be signed up immediately. Get a grip Villa FFS.

It goes to show how low English football has fallen when a useless turd like Delph gets called up.
      A Championship player at best.

Lanford.. i dont think Delph being in the England squad will have any bearing on a transfer.. if a club wants him he will already be earmarked..

Also.. Delph is a decent player but he is NEVER an England international.. shows the state of our national team that he is getting a call up..

With regards to Cleverly.. just do not get that at all.. why would we waste money on him when we need someone more creative.. hopefully it’s just a rumour with no substance..

Disagree mate. His bargaining power must be increased with an England call up. I think his call up is deserved when you consider that there are ‘lesser players’ in the squad. Coleback for example. In years gone by he wouldnt have got a sniff. This sums up just how poor England are these days.
Get Grealish, Delph and Vlaar signed up……NOW

At this present moment I would have pulis as manager, anything is better than what we have.Fans should not except anything less than a win against Hull. Team are coming to Villa Park and expecting 3 points from us.

So would I , he would have more tactical knowledge than Lambert, I’m beginning to wonder if the fans in cup games don’t matter anymore them games are thrown in as training for players that don’t get playing time. Us silly sods fall for this year in year out, when have any of us have had to fight to get tickets to any of the cups over the years, I’m right pissed off over lastnight for us fans.

Actually think Cleverly could be pretty decent for us. However the question is,is how do we play?

Sanchez is our only DM, so arguably needs to be playing. So he partners who? Delph? Cleverly? Westwood? Or do we solely play Sanchez at home and play a CM then an AM? Play Delph and Cleverly away? So many choices if he comes now. To play 2 in midfield or 3?

Although 8m is a lot for him. Especially when at least 1 winger is much needed before him.

Cleverly for 8m, Xabi Alonso for 5m. While you can’t compare prices, this is how pathetic average English players are going for.

Think the big thing it shows is either Lerner’s willing to spend, as I’d doubt we’d bid for Cleverly if we only had 8m to spend. So it shows we have money which is positive.
