Well, it’s the middle of winter and it looks like we have a good chance of snow early in the week.
Fortunately it’s early twenties here in Fuerteventura, so I don’t have to worry about that rubbish for another ten days.
I’m taking the proverbial. Apologies, but I can’t help gloating.
So over the last week or so I’ve been asking myself if I’ve been expecting too much from the Villa and have come to realise that I definitely am.
It’s as though I’m expecting us to go through the whole season winning every game and we all know that just doesn’t happen. Even the very best teams get beaten sometimes.
Yet, even so, I don’t see what’s wrong in wanting the best. The trouble is it leads to bitter disappointment when we do lose.
Will I change my thinking? I doubt it, but I can at least try to calm it down somewhat.
Which leads to the game against Everton. Put simply, I fully expect us to win this game, but also realise we could easily lose it, because it’s what we’ve done for decades.
Mind you, I remember years of us all saying we’ll never amount to anything if we can’t beat the top 6 and can only beat the “lower” clubs.
It seems things are totally the opposite now.
Maybe it would be better if we were facing an Everton in the top 10 of the table?
Everton currently lie 17th in the table on 16 points. That’s dangerously close to bottom three, which would probably make them an even more difficult task for us. They would have been twelfth without their 10 point deduction, which shows they’re not doing too badly although their form seems to have dropped off a bit and they lost their last game 3-0 to Wolves.
Squad news and we have Pau, Tielemans and Olsen available to be assessed today, which is definitely good news. The downside is that Lucas Digne is still out, but may be available for our next game.
Bertrand Traore is at the African cup of nations, which doesn’t really bother as a player, but he’s about the only asset worth any money and if his country do well, he might not even be available in this window. Which could be a real blow, because Emery has specifically said we’re having to work with a “one in-one out polcy”. So definitely no big name signings this month, which seems to be a real missed opportunity.
However, what we can we do if our hands are tied?
As for Everton Abdoulaye Doucoure could feature, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has had his 3 match ban overturned and Ashley Young is back in training. Idrissa Gueye will also be at the African cup of Nations.
Unai has said himself that basically Everton are not a bad side and they have many facets to their game. He also makes the point where they do try to attack you which should suit us better. He also says they work hard at winning the second balls and we all know we give those chances far too often.
So we’re going to have to press them and I feel that’s what the whole game is going to be about.
Can we outwork them in the midfield and basically, well, outpress them?
I have concerns, because we look tired and lacking sharpness lately. It’s obviously the same for Everton, but you would think they’re playing with more of a “survival” approach which can make players work harder.
That said, we have to tools to punish Everton and I see goals. Three of them.
Villa to win 2-1 in a very tight, probably scrappy game, with hopefully a couple of flashes of brilliance.
UTV!
Oops, ignore that comment.
I think these refs have been down the boozer before KO.
One positive is that we seem to be playing a different game today. A slightly different Villa. Anyone else notice this? It’s like we’re using the middle more instead of 95% relying on the wings…
2 cracking saves from Emi then…
2 superb bits of goalkeeping then.
Rss, I can’t mod your comment from my tablet. You typed your daddy wrong.
Addy, even.
And Coleman doesn’t get a yellow card for a clear scythe on Moreno
And then he gives a foul against Carlos for nothing – ref’s an absolute disgrace.
The only way we’re getting decisions is via the linesman!
Well, that wasn’t much of a watch.
Scrappy and could go either way, imo.
Apart from the 10 minute spell with the disallowed goal, we have looked devoid of ideas going forward. I can see Everton scoring first and if that happens then we will likely lose. I still think playing Konsa at RB means we lose the threat from Bailey.
This is our third chance to go top since December come onnn boys make our day
Diaby not really in the game – so far!
Now you’ve saidbthat will he grab the winner???
I could see this ending 0-0…
Diary has gone backwards that better worries me as well
Are modern footballers wimps?
This ref is complete crap – no surprise he was in charge of the Brentford – Villa game
I’m slowly giving up on football, VAR for one players rolling around as if being shot, it’s getting to me how a game becomes a farce rather than a game of football. Every week VAR comes under the scrutiny in the game we shouldn’t have this week after week it’s killing the game I can see us losing this game a silly ref decision.
At least manure beating spuds that will make us 4 points clear for champions league
Great shout Bill fucking tedious this mate John Duran is awful we need another striker
Gotta agree there. He seems a bit immature…A bit petulant.
Unai’s first 0-0 draw in the UK!
Disappointed. Oh well.
Bollox.
Coote must be the worst of the worst – complete homer.
Example – Kamara is clearly fouled on the edge of the area and Coote waves play on – and don’t get me started on Takowski – ref’s must be short sighted where he’s concerned!
Typical Dyche game – anti football.
Aghhhhhhhh.
The referee was a joke. Everton used spoiling tactics and how on earth Tarkowski wasn’t sent off is beyond me. Also Diaby being fouled in the box wasn’t looked at by VAR! Villa weren’t great in all honesty and we allowed ourselves to be sucked in by Everton’s tactics of slowing the game down. So after 97 premier league games, Emery gets his first 0-0.
Another first in a season of firsts 🙂
Well sometimes I amaze myself! I wrote a response to Badger’s opener before the start of the game and forgot to post it. In essence I thought we would lose today, so a draw is better than I predicted.
I was worried about Torres being out and Lenglet being the ball playing centre half. To be fair he played better than I thought.
Too often our passing was not crisp. It was clear Everton wanted to disrupt the flow of the game, which they succeeded at. I thought the ref was poor and lost control of the game. How dare Tarkowski argue against his booking on Moreno? How dare the ref book Tilesman after that commotion for nothing! Ref lost control. Even my wife who hates football and knows nothing about it thought the ref was poor!
Oh well 1 Point away from home.
After 98 EPL games without a 0-0, Unai takes a team to meet Sean Dyche’s Mixed Martial Arts and Provocation Enhancing Team. Since this bout was only partially refereed according to the laws of football Villa can be grateful to escape without serious injury or a TKO.
A foul not given by the referee is nevertheless taken into account by the Villa Are Robbed reviewer to chalk off our only score and thankfully the linesman gives Everton’s scorer offside. Not a fair result – but we say goodbye forever to Goodison with the claret & Blue flag still flying.
There’s talk that Everton’s new stadium won’t be ready till December 2024 so they might have another season at Goodison yet.
A fair bet who the first visitors to Albert Dock will be? I think Villa hold 3 debut visitors cards: Emirates; the revamped Vitality; Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Thankfully we missed the Olympic stadium because the crowd management was chaos – but now well sorted.
Not a great game but I was always taught that a point away in the PL is never a bad result. However, taking a step back for a moment, the main thing is that, even is West Ham win their game in hand, we are still 6 points from 6th spot. I’ve got a feeling that this is going to be a roller coaster ride for a lot of teams this season so, all in all, it’s not too bad, is it?
We can now rest and recuperate and after that we have a little run of games where we should get some points. Whatever happens, the ride has been great so far!
It happens everywhere…
‘Girona opened a one-point lead over second-placed Real Madrid at the top of La Liga on Sunday despite being held to a goalless draw at bottom side Almeria’.
Sound familiar?
Nothing is ever guaranteed in football except ……….!
The Spanish Inquisition?
One rule for the Sky Six ……..
Must be Badgers conspiracy theory’s rubbing off on me 🙂
