You have to laugh, don’t you?
Just as things were looking good, so we go and lose to a team that on paper suggests that we shouldn’t have.
I think it might have been the God Clough who first said we don’t play on paper and whoever it was, was totally correct, as proved today.
I have to hand it to Forest, they were incredibly well disciplined and totally frustrated us.
You know things aren’t going your way when we have so many players that looked anonymous.
John McGinn is one and Diaby was another. While they’ve been great this season, neither hardly had a look in. Watkins was another, but even when he did have chances, well I don’t know if he was just rubbish or it was just one of those days.
It’s incredibly difficult to criticise players when they’ve done so well previously and I don’t think I’m going too.
I predicted that we’d win this 2-1, but had a feeling that it would be a really tough game and so it proved.
One of the commentators suggested this was the best Forest have performed this season and I found myself thinking “how many times have we heard that before?”
Make no mistake about this. For all our possession and corners, Forest were by far the better side today and it was something I felt as early as 10 minutes into the game.
I’m not happy, but sometimes you just have to say we were beaten by a side that quite simply outperformed us.
I do have one complaint though.
Since when were two handed pushes in the back okay? Right in front of the ref too on one occasion.
Oh well, onwards and upwards. As my missus has just said.
You can’t win ’em all.
UTV
Sigh….
Pretty much summer it up, Badger. I really hope to see a reaction with two home games coming up…
Forest wanted it more, first to the ball, strong and physical.
Deserved their win.
This site gone as bad as villa
How so Roy?
Do you mean, having to write your name everytime and constantly need to refresh to see your post?
If so, I’m having that problem too.
Can’t comment for some reason very disappointing
You can comment Roy. You just won’t see it until you refresh a few times.
I don’t know why, but I think it’s something to do with a recent update. Hopefully it’ll be sorted soon.
Test.
It’s a bad day all over I think villa and unable to comment I give up. Going out to talk to the pigs about the match now
In the old days of Cathode Ray tubes and Television rental (yes Gen Z – TVs were so expensive people hired them) the Birmingham rental companies would experience a boom in faults claims after a result like that.
I saw a lot of games at the City Ground from 1970 onwards, and I don’t remember many with pleasure. A 6-0 tonking in a downpour that did for Vic Crowe still scars the memory.
Usually the team with more possession won, not today. Our final pass to the player attempting the strike was poor and Watkins proved once more he does not score goals when a defender is hassling him for the ball.
Sods Law of Football awards states the recipient will cock up the next match after collecting the award – Martinez proving the law with their second.
Ah yes. Radio rentals springs to mind.
I remember going to Forest for a LC game and we were 3-0 down at HT. It would have been 1979, give or take a year.
The enduring memory was the fact that if you jumped in the air, you could practically touch the corrugated tin roof 🙂
I think we lost 5-1 in the end.
Watching today, I saw the Brian Clough stand and remember it being built at a massive £1 million pound cost.
Built on the back of Clough’s success.
As for Martinez, well, yes, he was due to drop a rick, wasn’t he?
It just wasn’t our day at all.
And all of a sudden it’s ok for me. How strange.
I’m going to bed. 🙁
Off topic but we’ll played Luton.
Is modern football a fix?
Never in the reign of pigs plonk were there 8 extra minutes?
Total bullshit.
After talk with pigs I agree with them after 2nd goal they should have brought Carlos on for cash bailey for zaniola tilemens for kamara, and stop tippy tappy and go long mix it up more
Just like with Mon they bottle chance of 3rd and gain on arsenal and Liverpool
Always the same since started watching in 57 only 2 years of success crap
It doesn’t do anything to me having all the possession in a game and you lose. I still believe in playing football not trying to draw opponents out . Give me a footballer every time they do more damage than farting about passing back passes to the side that how we lose games, Forrest knew and played attacking football. Tired players my arse more like sod it players I’m in next week he won’t drop me . Drop players who don’t perform is my stance on football and we have a few duff players show them the door .
Bill, I think Emery would have been really disappointed with how we started both halves. I’m sure he will have them in on Monday morning to tell them complacency isn’t acceptable. It doesn’t matter how much better we are on paper if the attitude and commitment to the cause isn’t the same as the opposition. Today proved this and a performance below par needs a big reaction on Thursday. So far this season we have seen a good result following defeats.
Interesting.
It seems a few think we were just slack in our approach to the game.
My take is that Forest knew exactly how to play against us and we had no answer.
It’s something that we have to be aware of and it was exactly how Man City play; in your face and hassling.
We struggle with anything physical and it’s been that way forever.
We’ll beat most, but struggle against the likes of Forest.
Regardless, we’ll still finish miles above them.
Do I want a team of bruisers?
No, unless they’re top notch skilled too.
That’s the aim, I suppose, but we’ve always had a tendency to lesser built players.
Torres and Langlet are typical examples.
Who’s the beefiest player at Villa?
Maybe Bailey? Yet I’ve said previously that he’s not suited to a physical type of game, imo.
Hmm.
So disappointed today. Pool draw and we could have been 3rd, but I’m not complaining about our season. Badger is right about Forest being a team of bruisers. They weren’t dirty, just bloody hefty!!!
They sussed us out and deserved the 3 points while we need to rethink situations like this. We need to draw out teams who play with this formation. The same crosses coming in from both sides in an almost identical fashion and hoping for the best isn’t enough. Forest parked the bus and hit us on the break.
Why the first goal wasn’t offside baffles me and that was a nasty spin on the ball for the 2nd.
Bloody, bloody football!!!!! Grrrr!!!!
The first goal becomes vital for Emery’s tactics. If Villa are 1 up eventually the oppos must dispense with the parked bus and attack, that gives Villa the chance to exploit the pace of Watkins and Diaby.
But if Villa concede then teams can play as Forest did. Defeating that tight defence with yesterday’s team relies on a mistake or loose ball from a block that Villa can pounce on and there wasn’t one.
There are two alternatives that I can see: 1/ a battering ram style of player – Villa have just two – Duran and Ramsey: neither was available; 2/ a chip over the oppos back line which does not go near the keeper or over the goal line. I have seen Bailey and Moreno do that and the U-21 Kellyman. Something for all our attacking midfielders to practice.
Right now Emery takes a gamble every week that – a pass behind our back line won’t be collected by a good finisher who is onside – happens less often than Villa can convert chances themselves. That gamble failed in each of our 3 defeats.
Luiz has been called up for Brazil again after a couple of years.
Well deserved, imo.
Spurs without their 2 CB’s for Villa game. It’s all going wrong for them tonight.
Bit of an understatement Holte. Chelsea embarrassed them at home. Shocking win.
I saw a Spurs defeat coming, but I didn’t expect it to be to Chelsea.
I’m worried now, that they’ve had their loss and will get back on form.
That said, it’s pretty much the same as us.
Spurs are not a brilliant team, as much as I don’t want to jinx us by saying it.
At the same time Badger, they have injuries piling up as we get ours fit, and a number of suspensions to deal with. Great to see Moreno on the bench even if he didn’t get on the pitch.
I could see the Spuds game ending 5-5!!!, but then again our defence is better…when it wants to be!!!
I have seen a 5-5 Villa away at Spurs, Bum Bum. It was on a bone-hard pitch and Tony Hateley appeared for Villa wearing white ‘practice-boots’ i.e. they had moulded studs. That did not seem to matter Tony scored nearly all his goals with his head. Spurs led 4-1 at half time, I was disgusted, and when it went to 5-1 I thought of leaving. Then Hateley scored 4 goals with his feet and only a last gasp goal line clearance by Joe Kinnear prevented a Villa win.
Ah yes those where the days plus villa scored 5 in first half against Liverpool I remember
Was at the Liverpool game at VP – what a night that was – and I clearly remember the Spurs game.
Hi hitchens was the stand shaking that night?
Must have been a hell of a night
I’ve only been able to go villa park a few times they normally lose if I go so best stay away.
But remember a match against qpr and the holte end was actually shaking fantastic experience.
Shame it’s gone to expensive to go now with tickets and train fair plus hotel if night game as no train back then
Public transport useless
Yep – season ticket holder in Trinity Road Stand – took my young wife with me – well we were both pretty young! Used to stamp our feet on the old wooden stand so it was literally shaking!
We were also both at the League Cup semi final win against ManU (when we were in the old third division) in 1970 (got married the following year) – front row of the old Witton Road stand towards the Holte End. If memory serves correct it was goals from Pat McMahon and Andy Lochhead. 59,000 in the ground that night. And actually saw ourselves on the telly!
Wonderful memories.
Ah the good old days.
Spuds defeat compounds the missed opportunity. It was so predictable that teams at the top would drop points, and so it was. Newcastle breathing down our necks now and can’t imagine they’ll be willing to relinquish their CL status. Villa need to go on another run now…
Meanwhile, more shocking statements about bent refereeing coming through from Mark Halsey, a former referee. We’ve been saying they’re corrupt for a long time now. But the comatose sense of apathy continues…
No London bias going on there then?
Was the ball out? Maybe, maybe not.
Was it a push? Well if the defender hadn’t gone down like he’d been shoot with an elephant gun?
Offside? Who cares?
Get over yourself Mr milk tray man.
(That’s not aimed at yourself BFR)
🙂
Do I detect a double identity? I’m still smarting over the last game ..
Me too. 🙁
Duran is on the bench. Does this mean he was injured or as he come to terms with the fact that he isn’t good enough to be starting yet.
Reported he had a toe injury – perhaps he’s now decided to ‘toe the line’.
