Shay Given has been told by Aston Villa that he can leave the club and it’s Doncaster who is the first to move for the Irish keeper. It’s rumoured that Given is set to join Doncaster on a season-long loan and deal is set to be announced within 24 hours. Doncaster is now owned by Irish investors and have given funds for manager Paul Dickov to spend. It’s not known whether or not Doncaster is paying part of Given’s wage and also if the loan deal includes an option to buy at the end of the season.
Shay Given has lost his starting spot to Brad Guzan and with a massive wage of £50,000 a week. He simply had to go, especially since Aston Villa are cutting the wage bill. Additionally Paul Lambert has also brought in another keeper by the name of Jed Steer. I think it’s fair to say that Given did perform very well in his first season at the club. But ever since the Euro 2012, he just hasn’t been his old self. Also I think it was rather unwise of McLeish to give him a 5-year contract.
Realistically, how much are Donny going to be contributing to his wages? If it’s next to nothing surely he may as well stay and be available for selection? Another astute bit of business from Paul Faulkner?
If the Benteke deal goes through it wont hurt to pay him and Hutton off. Never understood the long contract, i also think his wages are nearer £80k a week. but all that said i wish him well he is a nice bloke off the field and does a huge amount with his Mrs for charity
£80,000 a week! No, I thought that Bent was the top earner at £60,000.
Either way he earns a lot of money at Aston Villa. And you’re right, he is a good man with a fantastic career and record. I do wish him well in the future
I thought bent was on 60k a week with add on that go upto 100k, i may well be wrong as i dont work in payroll lol
There are plenty who slate MON for his deals, but this has to be the worst of the lot, imo.
I’ve nothing against Shay, as he seems a good pro, but the deal was just stupid.
If I was a cynic, I’d say AM earned a nice few bob from that.
Good job I’m not a cynic then eh?
Actually McLeish signed Given, I think that MON would’ve trusted Guzan at the end. McLeish? Never, I don’t think that he rated Guzan.
I know AM signed him.
I said that in my previous answer, but it’s not very ovbious, I guess.
For info, I believe he’s on £56k a week.
You’d expect Donny to maybe pay £10k a week; ouch that’s painful.
Why is it Faulkners fault if he goes for nothing/subsidised wages but McCleish’s for the contract in the first place? I seem to remember most fans thinking Given was a good recruit.
Just asking?
At the time he was a good recruit, but many questioned the 5-year deal. And the high wages.
The club have now gone in a different direction, I don’t expect the club to be dishing out large contract’s anymore
The manager signs them up, but you’d expect it’s Faulkner who does the actual deal and writes the contract, along with the lawyers.
That said, who mentioned Faulkner anyway?
Total cock, who knows nothing about footy, imo.
A total bread-head, who thinks money is all that matters.
He’s not very good at that either.
All in my personal opinion, of course.
Just a response to Sir Earl Barratts comment really. TBH I don’t know if he is good, crap or average at his job (Faulkner that is). Just an easy target when people are fed up. It will be interesting how he/Lerner plays the Benteke situation though.
I was referring to the fact that we will have a player we will paying 50k + to play for someone else. That’s the sort of thing Man city do as they have the cash and a very large squad.
Agree SEB. It is sickening to see money wasted like this. It’s also a perfect example how far the balance of power has shifted to the players. If they want to ignore their contract and force a move they can, but you still have to pay them as normal even if they are benched/out of favour. If you want to get rid you still have to pay the difference if they are loaned or buy out their contract if transferred to a lower wage.
