Some positive news from the Villa camp this Saturday as Paul Lambert admitted that he plans to hold talks with defender Ron Vlaar prior to the World Cup this summer. Vlaar joined Aston Villa last summer and had a average campaign, made a difference but certainly needed a year to adapt to the Premier League. This year he has become Villa’s most important player. He is one of our few experienced players and organises the defence well. In-fact Villa are yet to win a game without Vlaar this season.
Ron Vlaar’s contract will expire at the summer of 2015 and Lambert want’s the defender to sign a new deal before the World Cup. Currently, Vlaar is Netherland’s best centre-back and Lambert fears that his performances will attract interest from all over Europe.
“He’ll definitely go to the World Cup,” Lambert said. “He has played in the last few games for them.
“He’ll go and has been playing well for us. When he’s not played it’s been a bit of a blow because he gives us that balance.
“But he’ll definitely go to the World Cup. I tend to speak to the players before they go away for the summer anyway, it’s always the case.
“Myself and Ron haven’t spoken about anything, I think he’s been happy playing.
“His form this year has been really good. Going to the World Cup is a big carrot for him. I’m pretty sure (the contract) will take care of itself.
“Going into the last year of his contract, you have to look at it.”
I’ve always backed Vlaar and this season he has displayed his importance to the team. It’s important to insure that Vlaar stays at Villa Park for a couple more years. Lambert has also admitted that he plans on holding contract talks with Marc Albrighton and Fabian Delph soon.
Certainly one of our improved players since signing,i for one am relieved when he’s fit & on the team sheet.i would like to see him & okore playing together in the near future.
The first words in this meeting should be ‘ What do you want Ron we will give you whatever you want……’
He’s the only one up till now that’s worth his money, just hope others can match his worth. Utv .
Gu on Concrete you know you love the Villa UTV
great form this season and im sure brings a confidence to the rest of the team on match day as well as marshalling the defence, we look a different side defensively when he plays.
got to have concerns about keeping him injury free though, he’s spent a lot of time on the treatment table, maybe he should take a leaf out of the McGrath training manual and stick to a lighter schedule(minus the booze and pills of course). seriously though I imagine the training at villa is pretty tough, a squad of young players playing a game that largely relies on playing without the ball which is much more exhausting physically on the old fella 😉 it maybe wise to have a slightly different set up for vlarr. McGrath said that his training style at villa gave him another 5/6 seasons in his career.
who knows maybe they do something like this already. seems obvious to me but what do I know?
how we could do with a paul mcGrath in this squad ~ the ball was magnetized to him, its a great shame he never got a role or was offered a role 2 teach the kids this great gift. positioning and reading the game was of the highest ~ and concrete ron has similiar qualities as did larsen
Vlaar is an invaluable player for us. Once Okore is fit, I think we will have a very solid looking centre half partnership.
