Recently I’ve been reading an article and peoples opinions on why Benteke decided to stay at Aston Villa, and it appears as though it’s believed that Benteke didn’t want to become a flop at his next big club. Yes, we’ve seen many players move away from Aston Villa and become a flop for the new team. Stewart Downing, James Milner, Ashley Young, James Collins, Luke Young, Cuellar, John Carew, Re0-Coker have all left Villa, either forcing a transfer or just being sold and haven’t really impressed or matched the same level of performance as they have at Aston Villa. Would have Benteke just followed that route?
Yes and no, Benteke is young and that’s the key here. He can still develop at any club really, but what Paul Lambert and Aston Villa offer is something different. At a top club the team isn’t built around a player, it’s built around a style of the manager. Here, it’s a bit different. Lambert’s philosophy works best with a big target man, it worked at Norwich with Holt and it’s certainly working with Aston Villa and Benteke. Lambert is making sure he get’s the service, Benteke bullies defenders, makes room for other players and certainly makes sure that all the players work together.
Back to the curse, why have many former Aston Villa players struggled? I’ve got one theory, Aston Villa is a family club, it is, you hear it very often from many players at the club. It’s a good atmosphere and what Lambert is doing is adding on to that. Okore and Helenius have already spoken at the pleasure of being here and how open it is. I can imagine at other clubs it isn’t all like that, especially at the top clubs where you have some players earning fortunes, and others not. It could also be the transfer fee, or the pressure to replicate the perform last seen.
But the curse can also work backwards, Ireland and N’Zogbia have never really settled or replicated their previous form.
I think Benteke would’ve struggled if he moved this season, I think he’ll have another great season and I certainly believe that the will be playing in the World Cup. And that ‘curse’ could be a reason for him staying.
Benteke wil be gr8 dis season buh he shud hve joind tottenham instead of stayin at villa
Good article, I hadn’t thought of it like that.
And Obeng, sod off.
Nonsense, he should stay at villa make a name for himself, and then join a top champions league club..even benteke laughed when asked if he was joining spurs.
Obeng should have joined spuds are you for real they have no real history and their ground is only fit for growing spuds and cabbages. You certainly are not a Villan coming out with comments like this mate Villa are the greatest league club in the history of football.
So you think Milner has not impressed at Man City….. Are you having a laugh?
I don’t think he’s been all that good, especially 28 million good.
Doesn’t play all that much, but has good work rates and did create a bit for City. But with the new signings, he’ll be playing even less.
Milner was probably their best midfielder for the past 2 seasons with Toure, and one of their best performers overall. Furthest thing from a flop.
The only curse is getting rid of dead wood surely Bent for example cant get 5 m for him loan him out till January might get the 7m for him when clubs pay over the top for players in that window think because we seem desperate clubs will take the piss
How on earth has Milner not impressed. He’s been a key member of a title winning side, won an FA cup and played in the CL. The rest I agree with but putting Milner in there is just plain wrong.
Out of all the players we have sold Milner is the one we miss the most IMO. His attitude and work rate are second to none. Milner would be welcome in almost every top team in Europe!
“Benteke wil be gr8 dis season buh he shud hve joind tottenham instead of stayin at villa”
Too late now and he may have flopped at Tottenham!? – Tottenham are NOT in the champions league AGAIN. If we hold on to Benteke and keep improving our team, Villa can be up there with Spurs.
Lose the Text speak – you look dumb!
Benteke did the right thing for his career staying at AVFC for the simple reason of 1st team football. He has that opertunity to start regular games and prove he can do it consistently.Playing regular starts and scoring regularly gets him into the Belgian 1st team and off to the World Cup.He might not get that same sort of treatment at a recently more successfull club.I hazard a guess that no one came in for Benteke with the right money so he had to stay and make the best of it.UTV
Villa curse?! What a load of codswallop. If players do less well at other clubs it suggests they made a mistake in leaving Villa. The fact of the matter is that some players just feel at home and produce their very best at certain clubs, it possibly has something to do with chemistry and the relationship the club and player have.
Dean Saunders instantly clicked with Villa.
Peter Withe, Paul McGrath, Alan Wright, Shaun Teale and so on are players who just clicked with the club and produced great things in the shirt. There are many other players I could list who fit in this category.
It happens with other clubs, too. Torres at Liverpool was a world beater but he simply hasn’t been the same player since leaving. Charlie Nicholas was great at Celtic but not so hot at Arsenal. There’s a lot to be said for feeling at home at a club and having a great rapport and relationship with the fans…it’s nowt to do with curses and everything to do with being human.
Agree but Torres last season and a half with Liverpool was t so great though he was injured tbf
Then there was Sasa curcic remember him great with Bolton and an exciting signing for us but he just never produced for whatever reason
thats a nitemare from the past lol wot about bosko balaban
Lol djemba djemba so shit they named him twice
@Obeng.
Have you been following football long, my friend? Villa are a far better bet than clubs like Spurs.
RIP… Former Blues striker Christian Benitez has died aged 27. On behalf of Villa fans we send our condolences to his family, friends and loved ones!
RIP Christian!
Ashley Young did well in his first season at MU and Milner has been consistent at City…but I get your point. These players are big fish in a little pond at Villa and then they just become another player at these clubs.
Its hard to put your finger on players like Nzogbia though, i thought he would have been great at Villa. He was the main signing that summer, the player the fans wanted to see…he got to play in different positions and he never really got going.
With reagrds to slashing the wage bill and getting rid of the ‘Bomb Squad’
Think Bent will def go.. Bannan too fingers crossed..
Hutton.. Given and Fonz will all eventually leave this window but most likely on loan and subsidized wages..
With Petrov Dunne Warnock all already gone.. thats 140K weeks wages saved.. Bent and Bannan will be another 80K min IMO..
We will probably save 50K on subsidized wages for Hutton Given and Fonz..
All in all that still a whopping 270Kish we will probably get rid off by end of August..
I think the 6 new players are probably on about 100K tops between them.. there is still room to get at least two decent quality players in for around 35K a week each and still bank 200k of savings..
Lionheart think one to come but two not so sure. your sums add up by the way.
We made our best and most expensive signing last summer on the very last day of the window in benteke. I’m sure, after removing some members of the ‘bomb squad’ we’ll see a similar ending to this window. If we off load all of the deadwood, I can realistically see 2 new faces coming in.
Please please let at least the first if it’s going to be two a proper ‘number 10’. Then a another CH would be nice.
Yup, hopefully Lambert pulls off another Benteke type signing on August 31st!! A quality playmaker…
And a centre half plus back up for Lowton and a new left back as Luna looks no better than Bennett from what iv seen and heard so far. Good going fwd but defensively shit
I’m quite liking Tony Moon
Me too. Moon has played a few friendlies, let’s give him a chance. He’s made some good tackles, has already scored (albeit ruled offside) and has one more foot than Bennett. I think he’s going to be very good, and allow Okore/Baker/Vlaar to concentrate on their own jobs.
Do you think Lambert is going to try El Ahmadi in the number 10 role?
Kae has come from nowhere into the reckoning. I don’t rate him one bit too error prone and not physical enough and is a busy fool. Having said that he looked half decent v utd and has a decent pre season so maybe he’s turned a corner. But if he isn’t doing it in first few games then that’s it IMO
Oohah mate am still not getting E-Mail alerts from the site and this page there is no boxes to tick to request them can you help.
Have u tried logging out and back in again terry?
Ooh, I just tried this and it changed nothing, even when you click on the sun follow sign it goes to a dead page, before the website change I got mails regularly now I have to log onto the main website.
Nani has been reportedly offered to psg and Monaco for 8.5m. I think that’s pretty cheap in all honesty. I think he would be good for us, always been overshadowed at united. Long shot definitely but might be worth a bid.
Jesus Adam Nani? Leave it out mate he has got to be the most over hyped, over rated overpaid pile of shite of I have ever seen in any a football shirt and that includes Mr Ireland (although he runs a very close second.)
He’d have to at least halve his 100k wages. I mean he’s got a lot of talent when he feels like playing, he’s a lot like Ade, really talented, doesn’t care enough. There’s a reason he’s only offered to clubs willing to pay such wages.
Adam i can really see Mr ‘show boat’ Nani coming to Villa Park on 40k a week and fitting the Pl player profile too…
Yeh true the wages would be an issue I did forget that lol
