I think many of us would have taken a point today and even I managed to predict this one, although I said it would be one each.
There were suggestions that Southampton might already have their holiday heads on, but I never agreed with that point of view and indeed Southampton came out much the better side and looking much the bigger threat for the first half hour or so.
We came back into it quite well though and were actually the better side for around ten minutes in the latter part of the first half.
We also started the second half brightly, although I always felt that our opponents looked the best bet to score.
Despite Marc Albrighton putting in some cracking crosses yet again, I never really got the feeling that we’d put one away, whereas I always felt Southampton might.
Which is why I actually agreed with Grant Holt coming on today.
I don’t feel he added much, but it was the right call in my opinion.
Talking points?
Well, they had a decent penalty call for handball with Bertrand being the one involved, but I never like those ones, where you’re only a couple of feet away when the ball is hit.
You don’t get a chance to move away and given that I like to think of myself as very honest, I’m going to agree with the ref not giving it.
The best talking point for me though was Callum Robinson getting a few minutes.
It’s about time the kids got a look in, even though I’m not madly convinced they’re good enough.
The point is, if we don’t give them a go, we’ll never know will we?
He certainly got involved in the few minutes he was on the pitch, so I’d say he deserves another go.
Was his appearance down to Lambert or Cowans though?
The cynic in me thinks it might indeed have been down to Lambert, but only after he’s been told by Lerner or Faulkner to get at least one of the kids on just to appease one of the fan’s biggest criticisms of the manager.
I can’t say it was a bad performance by the lads today. They all worked hard and at the end of the day we got a much needed point.
I’m still wondering where the goals are coming from without Benteke.
But I very much suspect that might be the point that saves us from the drop and possibly more importantly Lambert’s neck.
Which is why I don’t know how to feel today.
While of course, I’m glad of the point, I also want Lambert gone as I simply don’t trust him to deliver anymore.
I suspect many of you may feel the same.
Lambert? Get shot of him. Wasn’t it 14% possession in the first twenty minutes?
Lambert will be gone in the summer. His body language gives him away. I think he know’s exactly whats coming this summer and probably has for a while.
Lamberk out!
Why did he take our best MF of kae for holt. He hasn’t got a fuckin clue
I don’t think I’d ever describe El Ahmadi as our “best midfielder”.
He played for that point and got it.
The sooner he goes the better.
Because he was absolutely fucked and started to show. Right call that one
Look out, the great one has spoken!
Lambert has to go at the end of the season. Think back to Mcleish, one day after season we shipped him out. I’m hoping that we do the same again. Lambert has done nothing to deserve to carry on at Villa.
We got lucky today and we all know it.
Bum Bum,
Really?
I think that was the game plan, to try and hit them on the counter.
But agreed it’s a shocking tactic to concede that much possession at home.
Again, I can understand why he does it, as our players just aren’t good enough on the whole to go out and take the likes of Southampton on.
But you have to ask who signed the players.
It’s just another one of the reasons I want Lambert gone.
And I don’t think survival will change my attitude.
I was quoting the bbc website. Went to the zoo instead of the game. Fewer monkies there…One did look very much like Lambert though! Lol!
we need to sign at least 6/7 players, ship out clarke/baker bennet luna herd gabby westwood tonev nzog bent given hutton holt bowery
lol JVillan, made me chuckle that, the never ending list of tripe down at VP, get em all out! Apart from Guzan, Guzan’s a top bloke by the looks of it
Yep, I agree Lambert will be gone at the end of the season.
If this takeover talk is true (which I doubt somehow), it wouldn’t surprise me if Lambert has been offered a big fat bonus just for keeping us up.
His latest interview in the Evening Mail, where he said “it doesn’t matter about my future, it’s the club” etc, convinced me he’s a goner, but who knows, given the takeover talk might be a load of rubbish?
Happy with the point nuff said.Lambert out Lerner out. 🙂
The best positive of all – it is highly likely that there are now only 4 games left under Lamberk and hopefully Lerner.
Lets just get over the line and then 100% focus can go on the possible takeover.
The difference with today and every other game is our defensive line sat higher up the pitch. So for all of the possession Southampton may have had they did not really do much with it. Both teams had missed chances to turn the game.
Albrighton was great, Westwood played well as did KEA. Wiemann has not done anything for me this year.
Everyone seemed to have worked hardno complaints from me but no real cheers either
Dull and lucky to pick up a point. No urgency and we were poor out the blocks. More effort than in previous weeks but it’s evident the quality just isn’t there.
Gabby and Weimann totally hopeless up front.
I just hope the Lambert nightmare era is drawing to a close.
Very happy Villan to get a point out of that one, never saw a 0-0 scorline today!
Lambert the saviour!!!! Get him on a new contract quick sharp!!
How about a hit man contract lol
I still can’t believe that no one calked for his head today just shows how many fans accept this crap
totally agree oohah
i disagree oohah the villa fans were the difference 2day, backed the team all the way. maybe they will call for his head once we are safe, but not while the team still needs them
We called for his head last week away. I don’t no about u but another season of lamberk and Lerner and that’s it for me I’m off. Dead serious as well
i personally not sure, i mean the guy hasn’t be given a fair crack. but at the end of the season if he goes farewell. but many issues need to be sorted, like lerner gets his puppet to say villa are not for sale last month, when clearly lerners cost cutting, is nothing more than, making the books look more inviting to prospect buyers.
if we survive. also lerner is willing to sell, then waiting for the new owners to replace lambert is the only way. i av doubts lerner will find some muppets to pay 300 mill, wot lerner has blown, 200 mill wot some spin doctors quoted, i doubt will temp lerner. didn’t fulham sell for around 200 mill and they are located in the capital
i agree standards of play has deteriorated, but when you replace premier class players with novices and foreign, you are gonna get poorer standards, behind the scenes villa finances have improved remarkably in the lambert era
Finances would improve anyway despite lambert. Most of the bomb squad gone and more sky money would of happened anyway. Also any other Lerner manager would of had the same budget. They both need to go Lerner wants out and will run the team on the bare min to stay up. And lamberk is crap pure and simple
Nath, but who made the books so bad in the first place? Ellis left the club with zero debt. A bit like Tony Blair taking over from the Tories…
u missed my point, lambert has brought these cheaper players in, because he was instructed to lose the big earners, hence not having a fair crack. he created a squad of mostly players not quite ready for premiership. in the 2years hes slashed the debts and running costs are much lower. we were in a very bad shape b4 he arrived we all av short memories. but your rite lerner needs 2 jump first, new owner will want his own manager so everyone should be happy, YOU WOULD THINK we aren’t ever happy lmao
buenos noches
Fair point but he has still spent over £40m in 2 seasons that is still a lot more than managers if teams higher up the table have had.
lerner and his chief monkey are to blame, allowing MON to spend loads on bad purchases and replacing MON with bad replacements and aving to pay the full contracts up to get shut. lerner is to blame, hes the fool that allowed these muppets to run villa
oohah
40mill to create a new squad is nothing lets be honest, most premier clubs spend this on one player,
We didn’t need to create a new squad pl went for for quantity not quality
sorry i disagree
he needed to create a squad ppl get injured, u can’t rely on 13 players like 1981’s. lerner would have insisted on wages reduction. hence why a bomb squad, next year we could add about 3 or 4 proven premier class, add 2 or 3 of the youth players like robinson the 2 loaned out in league 1 this year, mutton and bent maybe moved on. players lambert bought if they fail 2 make the grade. it won’t be to hard 2 move um on, as their wages are much smaller
I dont thnk anyone sang for Lambert either. I heard Claret Army but no Lamberts army.
I think everyone accepts the inevitable which is Lambert leaving n the summer. We were not great but the difference in the quality was obviously an improvement. i never understood why Baker and Vlaar always sat in the D. Today they sat on the half way line, i think this one tactic shut down most of Southamptons attacks. I think this was something that has been introduced by our temporary coaching staff.
I bet Culverhouse was bursting blood vessels when he saw Robinson come on, he had a couple of bad touches but the crowd got behind him and he got the minutes on the pitch he deserves.
The game was not quite dull but not very exciting either.
Sunderlands run in is probably the most interesting and will have the biggest impact on the bottom half of the top table than any other team. Norwich are gone for me as are Fulham the other place could be anyone from the baggies, Cardiff, Sunderland, Swansea or ourselves.
Lucky for us there are worse teams but 35 points from 34 games is a fuckin disgrace IMO. If that would of happened under mcleish the fans would frothing at the mouth
At this stage that record is worse than big ecks.
the way the results have gone today whats the betting on Norwich picking up something tomorrow. p.s. Lambert has got a new contract “600minutes and free texts”!
No chance mate Norwich will be lucky to get nil tomorrow they will get battered trust me Suarez will get at least 3. Fair play to Sunderland though to go to city and Chelsea away and get 4 points is great for them. I did want poyet as well 🙁
So nearly six points as well!!!
That Sunderland result has put the cat amongst the pigeons.
They have 3 winnable home games and their tales will be up.
I still think we need to win one of the next 2 games to be safe and will have to play better than today to do it.
We are fine mate don’t forget our gd effectively gives us 36 points
cardiff 1/6
norwich are 2nd favorites 2b relegated 1/3
fulham 2/5
sunderland 4/6
i do have worries lmao, fulham and sunderland both are very capable of getting results, i also think norwich may get a win against arsenal, iam as nervous as a french solider without a white flag
Lucky we didn’t get poyet then, they’re rock bottom…. We get 10 points from City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea and you’re totally negative about it……Sunderland get those few points and its “fair play” Sort it our mate…..
They deserved it we didn’t except v Chelsea. They did it away as well esp at Chelsea under pressure
Difference is he did t take over till October after PDC run the team down so not his players and he didn’t have a preseason. While wev had this mumbling fuckwit for 2 years and we are worse not better
Oohah mate he will still be here this time next season…. No one has realised all this takeover talk is more shit leaked by the PR Dept of ASton Villa so the fans don’t get on the teams back and we scrape survival, more season ticket renewals, then ‘the same shit different day’ next season…
Unfortunately I agree saddened. Well if fans are stupid enough to renew next season without finding out the truth first that’s their problem. Their money they can do what they like even if we don’t agree with it. More fool them imo
as soon as fans started to feel they didn’t care if we went down, it would affect the players and some takeover bullshit came out because if we did go down it would hurt Randy’s long pockets…… It absolutely stinks!
i also agree
coincidence the fans turn on lambert weekend palace beat us, then leaks of a takeover and replacing of 2 coaches for a very popular man in cowans ,given whos popular with players. i said at the time its to get everyone singing from the same hymn sheet
We’d have been so much better off with Poyet! Or even Pulis!
It’s speculation at the moment that Lambert is gone as we really do not know.Shit point today even though it was Saints and a clean sheet we did not score.Im disappointed at this season and we still could go down.UTV

Looked through many posts and don’t think this has been pointed out. Found it interesting myself.
just read that myself andrew i thought i read or heard this last sunday but could not remember where i saw it
Think they’re under investigation for doing it to other clubs. It’s quite odd.
Yep just seen. The bit about gabby doing fuckal without posession sums it up for me
Must admit that this is yet another season that I can’t wait to end. Becoming a bit of a habit…
Always used to enjoy the run-in because we were often competing for something – even if it was only a promotion out of a lower division, or trying to qualify for the old UEFA Cup places; but that all seems very long ago.
Problem is that unless there’s a top-down serious change at the club between now and August [we’re only talking about 4 months!] then what will there be to look forward to next term? Same old, same old.
The Mumbling Manager isn’t the only change that’s needed; we got rid of one just like him two years ago and look where we are again.
So a poll taken claims 86% of Villa fans want Lambert gone.
Andy Gray has told Lerner to sell up.
Neil Moxley claims Lambert’s trying to sell Villa for 200m to an MLB team owner but it’s hit a snag at the moment.
http://www.101greatgoals.com/blog/two-employees-of-a-premier-league-club-snorted-cocaine-in-the-boardroom-of-a-rival-team-police-called-observer/ here’s another bit of speculation i reckon before Wednesday once the press start flexing their muscles we should know if these transfer rumors are real
Just read a bit that Lambert’s sent scouts to watch Sergi Darder on a few occasions and liked him ever since the pre-season game. Could get him for a reported 7m fee due to Malaga needing cash. I love speculation.
Yeah like that’s really going to happen Andrew more chance of juggling soot!!
The snag is it’s all made up bollox so Lerner has a get out clause when st sales targets are hit. Also a USA baseball owner no thanks be the same as Lerner trust me and a pal of his too
Or it could go the way of Liverpool who are also owned by a Baseball team.
“Made up bollox so Lerner has a get out clause when st sales targets are hit”… Oh….. My…… God……….
Seriously ever since that Daily Fail article came out, which claimed Lambert wants more money, which actually came out I believe a month or two ago by real papers, you’ve gone incredibly boring and are far too repetitive with this garbage.
The people that are likely to buy it are worth around 1.1 billion pounds. What’s the point they’ve not much more money than Lerner ffs. One of the rumours is an owner whose team are run frugally on a budget. Frying pan and fire spring to mind. No more Americans no more Scottish managers please
Have you looked up Baseball teams though? Owners throw money around like it’s nothing. I don’t know much about it as it bores me, but average players are signing 5-6 year deals worth 20-30m over that time period. That’s 4-5ish million a season. Owners are doing that all over the place in Baseball. They’re not afraid to splash the cash.
It could be the incredibly frugal Astro’s owner or the more willing Ranger’s owner. Or it could not even be an MLB owner who wants us. That’s the fun part of speculation. But I highly doubt anyone among Villa Park are telling these writers to make up stories that MLB team owners wanna buy Villa.
A comment by someone who I guess knows more about the Astro’s owner than either of us would.
“Saying that Crane is “running things on the cheap” is a misrepresentation of what he’s doing.
Yes, it’s true the Astros haven’t spent a ton of money on their major league roster since he took over. They’ve spent a very healthy chunk of money on acquiring young talent that hasn’t reached the majors yet, and have put a damn good staff in place to develop what they have and bring in more. The organization was in no shape to compete when Crane bought it, so he focused on getting it healthy financially again and rebuilding their minor league system to get them ready to be healthy in the long run, and made it clear that once the organization is ready, there would be money available to expand the payroll and bring in premium talent.
Long story short: Crane doesn’t just go in blindly hurling around money like some owners do, who generally wind up making existing issues worse in the long run. He wants to compete in the long term, and builds smart to do just that.”
In other words it’s Lerner mark 2!! Don’t bother may as well stick with Lerner
pool av scored oohah yeah goaLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
2 nilLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
OohAh expert predictor
Ha ha I told u they’d get mullered
